Safe Use Aluminium Ladders

Do the users of the ladders know how to use them safely?

Using aluminium ladders and all types of ladders and step ladders requires some good safety practices.  People should only use aluminium ladders if they are competent and aware of choosing a safe location and practicing the pre-use checks which need to be done.

When using aluminium ladders and other ladders including step ladders DO NOT:

  1. Move them while either yourself or someone else is standing on the rungs.
  2. Support them by the rungs or the steps at the base.
  3. Stand them on moveable objects like lift trucks or pallets.
  4. Slide down the stiles.
  5. Extend a ladder while standing on the rungs.

People using aluminium ladders should be:

  • Trained and instructed in the use of this equipment safely
  • Wearing sensible footwear such as safety shoes/boots or trainers.  Shoes should not have dangling laces or soles hanging off, nor be thick with mud or anything slippery.
  • Be knowledgeable in preventing members of the public or other untrained workers from using the aluminium ladders.
  • Be fit in so far as certain medical conditions and some medication are not suited to using ladders.  Additionally any alcohol or drug abuse cannot be part of ladder use.
  • Aware of dangerous weather conditions such as strong winds.
  • Be able to tell when the aluminium ladder is the right length for the job.
