Safe Location Extension Ladders

Is it a safe location to use a ladder?

When you are considering work with extension ladders if is very important to also think about the location where you will be setting it up.

Will it be on firm ground?  If not you need to spread the load by using a board

Will it be on level ground?  Guidelines are a maximum side slope of 16 degrees or a back slope of 6 degrees.  Then the rungs will also need to be levelled using a levelling device.

Will it be on a clean solid surface?  There should be no oil, leaf litter or moss and the surface should be free of loose materials such as packaging or sand.  It must be cleaned before the work.  Also remember that shiny floor surfaces can be slippery even if they have not been contaminated.

Always secure extension ladders.

Can you be struck in the location? Ensure that you are in a location that will not be struck by vehicles, where necessary you must protect the working location with suitable barriers or cones.

Can you be pushed over? Steer clear of hazards such as doors or windows.  You must secure them or else have a person standing guard.

Can pedestrians walk under the ladder?  The ladders must be protected from pedestrians with cones, barriers or a person standing guard.

Can you put the ladder at the correct angle of 75 degrees? Ensure that the location allows this.

Do not work 6m horizontally of any overhead power lines unless the owner of the line has either made them dead or protected them with insulation.

Do not rest ladders against weaker surfaces such as plastic gutters or glazing.  You can alternatively use effective stand-offs or spreader bars.
