Extension Ladder Work Plan

When using an extension ladder you need to take steps to reduce the risks of falls and accidents that could happen.  The extension ladder work plan should include safety precautions which will prevent incidents to those using the equipment, or other workers or visitors to the work site.

Make sure that the work is planned properly and appropriately supervised.  Assess that the place where the work at height is to be carried out is safe.  Also assess the weather conditions and do not carry out the work if these conditions are not suitable.

The person using the extension ladder should be sufficiently trained and fit to do the work.  Always inspect the extension ladder before commencing any work to ensure it is in a safe working condition.  Control risks of surfaces and falling objects before starting the work.

Where this isn't possible you need to ensure the work is carried out from a safe working platform. This may be an existing structure, such as a flat roof. If not, or if the existing structure isn't suitable - perhaps if you're working on a roof - you'll have to provide a safe working platform, such as scaffolding.

Remember that ladders should only be used for light work of short duration (ideally periods of 15-30 minutes).   Extension ladders should be used as a means of access, rather than as a working platform.

If there is any lifting or manual handling as part of the work, during the risk assessment you should consider using lifts and hoists to reduce the risk of falls and other incidents.
